1 in 6 adults in England and Wales now registered with Patients Know Best
Patients Know Best (PKB), the world’s largest Personal Health Record (PHR) solution, has reached landmark scale, with one in six adults across England and Wales now registered on the platform. With 8 million registered patients, PKB is currently releasing over 33 million test results every month.
Alongside rapid user acquisition, patient engagement is also accelerating. In July 2026, 1 in 3 registered patients logged into their PKB record at least once a month, up from a historical baseline of 1 in 4. Since PKB introduced the capability in May 2025, over 5 million patients have requested to add a copy of their GP data to their PKB record, bringing primary and secondary care information into a single unified view.
PKB was established as a social enterprise in 2008 with a clear mission, to empower individuals with access to their health information. PKB aggregates data from public and private sector organisations, medical devices and wearables, alongside patient entered data, all in a single patient record. Integrated into the NHS App in England from 2020 and more recently the NHS Wales App, patients can engage with their information through the national front door or directly in their PKB record. Using PKB’s sharing functionality, patients also gain the unique ability to securely share their data with any individual or organisation anywhere in the world.
Giving citizens the ability to access and share their health information opens up new possibilities for individuals to actively participate in their care while supporting the wider health system. Clinical trial engagement stands out as a primary example of recent progress pioneered by PKB in this space. Trial recruitment is notoriously slow, creating a barrier to individual care and life sciences innovation. Coded data means PKB can automatically show relevant research opportunities directly to eligible individuals within their own record. Patients remain in control, sharing their record only when interested. Early results show faster recruitment and significantly broader access by diverse patient groups.
Originating in the UK through extensive work with NHS trusts and private health organisations, PKB is now expanding internationally. The platform is deployed in key global markets, including Canada, and recently launched as the single digital patient record for all 20 million citizens of Lagos State, Nigeria.
