On World Mental Health Day, Patients Know Best (PKB) has reached another milestone in digital healthcare: over 500,000 registered service users across England now have direct access to their health records through the PKB platform.

PKB currently supports more than a third of Mental Health Trusts in England. Alongside this, all patients in England can request to add their GP data, providing them with a single patient record. By consolidating health records into one place, PKB enables service users to take an active role in managing their care - often across multiple organisations - helping to reduce waiting list deterioration and ease strain on NHS services.

This milestone comes alongside rapid national momentum and a track record of digital firsts across the sector. Integrated with the NHS App since 2019, PKB led the way in mental health integration through the national front door, supporting trusts to share everything from documents and care plans to questionnaires and appointments. Over 18 months ago, PKB enabled the first Mental Health Trust to go live on the NHS Wayfinder service with bespoke screens - a capability now expanded to eight trusts.

PKB continues to expand its reach with new implementations and measurable clinical impact:

  • Rapid deployment: Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust went live this summer with PKB just seven weeks after contract signing, while Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust have also recently joined PKB’s growing roster of NHS mental health partners.
  • Seamless system integration: PKB is system-agnostic and is working with multiple Trust EPR systems. Most recently, South West Yorkshire Partnership Teaching NHS Foundation Trust (SWYPTFT) became the only trust in England sharing SystmOne care plans directly with patients via the NHS App.
  • Enhanced Outcome Tracking: Trusts like Nottinghamshire Healthcare have automated DIALOG Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), boosting completion rates from 1–2% to over 30% in just three months.

Reaching half a million mental health service users is a proud personal moment for me, having led our response to the drive across mental health organisations to commission patient engagement portals. By providing instant access to care plans and records via the NHS App, we are empowering individuals while supporting trusts to deliver more efficient, responsive care.
