Patients Know Best (PKB), the world’s largest Personal Health Record (PHR) platform, today announced a strategic investment from DNV - an independent assurance and risk management provider, operating in more than 100 countries, with the purpose of safeguarding life, property, and the environment.

The investment will provide a robust underpinning for PKB to expand its single patient record (SPR) functionality, enabling new capabilities and serving new verticals while accelerating international growth. It follows a rigorous selection process, securing investment from a Foundation owner and purpose driven organization aligned with PKB’s mission as a Social Enterprise.

"We are thrilled to welcome DNV as a true partner. This is a strategic alignment with a Foundation that believes in our mission and with which we share great synergies. DNV’s global reach, well-connected network, and ethical alignment with our status as a social enterprise are exactly what we were looking for in a partner. I’m also extremely grateful to the team at FirstCapital, led by Co-Founder and Chairman Hazel Moore, for advising us on this transaction - their support has been invaluable.", says Dr. Mohammad Al-Ubaydli, CEO and Founder of Patients Know Best.

Established in 2008, PKB has a proven record building its business with the NHS in the UK.  Its solution is used by over 25% of NHS England's providers and in 2020 was the first PHR to integrate with the NHS App. PKB currently hosts records of 20 million UK patients, with over 5.6 million registered patients.  Around 2 million patients have added their general practitioner (GP) record into their PKB record since the feature launched on 1st May 2025. This is because 24% of patients log in at least once a month and 10% at least once a week, as patients use and benefit from their PKB record.

In December 2024 PKB won the SPR contract for all 20 million people in the state of Lagos in Nigeria. Other new territories include the Netherlands and Germany.

The investment from DNV will support growth through this global expansion, alongside continuing to scale the business in the UK and target new verticals, levering its population health management engine.

With businesses across diverse industries, including maritime, energy systems and healthcare, DNV is a leading provider of digital solutions for managing risk and improving safety and asset performance.

The company’s growing healthcare business focuses on helping organizations deliver high-quality, person-centred care through accreditation, certification, and digital solutions.

DNV’s investment in PKB is a strategic partnership with a business that shares its values and ambitions.

Stephen McAdam, DNV’s Segment Director for Digital Health and an expert in sustainable healthcare, will join the PKB board.

“DNV has long-term strategic ambitions in healthcare. Within digital health, we are committed to building a strong portfolio of investments that help tackle the critical challenges of data security, data quality and data sharing. We have followed PKB’s progress for several years and are convinced that their approach of empowering patients will not only contribute to improving data quality and data sharing, but also to enhancing healthcare efficiency and achieving better outcomes for patients”, Stephen says.
